New Shed… Finally!

We really needed a garden shed. Our garage was packed with lawnmowers, bikes and all sorts of other stuff and it was driving me crazy. So one of this summer’s projects was to put a shed in the back yard.

I found what I thought was a pretty good deal on a wooden shed kit from a local business right in our end of town. The price was right, and the sheds were large, attractive and well-made.

But what a nightmare it was building the thing! First, the floor boards were peeling so I had them deliver me new ones. Then, I found one of the floor skids was terribly crooked, making it impossible to level the floor. And then the trusses turned out to be incorrectly built – in TWO ways. Argh!

So, after several tries, we finally finished the shed and painted it. The first picture below is of the shed the day after we painted it. The second was taken this weekend – right after I landscaped around it with some nice, grey shale. We are very happy with the shed, and the timing for finishing it could not be better – it snowed one day after it was done!

The Schlacht’s – Thanksgiving 2010

This being Iocchelli-ville, it might be easy to forget about the other side of my family – my wife’s side. Well, here we all are – The Schlacht’s! We are a handsome bunch, don’t you think?

A Sidewalk To Go With The New Steps

What a lot of work this was! But, I think, worth it. :)

Zia Teresa, “Thank-you for you”!

Zia (Aunt) Teresa

Zia (Aunt) Teresa

I was visiting some of my family’s Facebook pages yesterday when I happened on something Jason Webster wrote on my cousin Angela’s wall (Jason & Angela are married). He typed, “Thank-you for you” and I immediately knew where the phrase came from – my Aunt Teresa, who also happens to be Angela’s Nonna.

Many years ago (I think at Easter on my parents farm) cousins, aunts & uncles were visiting. At the end of the visit, everyone was thanking everyone for everything. “Thank you for coming”, “Thank you for dinner”, “Thank you for the wine” etc. etc. etc.

It was then that my Aunt Teresa – in her wonderful Italian accent, and warm, charming way piped in with “tank-ah you for YOU”. We all laughed and took our turns repeating the phrase.

And, as you can see, it’s still being repeated today. It’s become legendary among the Iocchelli clan… we should put it on a family crest or something.

I’ve Started Working On Our Family Genealogy Again

Fausto Iocchelli

Fausto Iocchelli

It’s been a long time since I’ve done any research, but Iocchelli.com has come together so nicely that it’s motivated me to get back at it. The Iocchelli Family History Website is back online with a fresh new look. Click on the picture of my Nonno at left to check it out and wish me luck!

Summer Project – Step Replacement

Our front entrance bugged Lori and I for many years. The steps leading up to our front door were narrow, making it difficult to enter, and they were dangerous to negotiate in the winter. In addition, the poor design of our roof gable and gutters made rain and snow accumulate right on and in front of our steps. It was a pain in the ass and a safety hazard.

So one of this summer’s projects was to fix all of that.

We hired 1st Step Stairs to replace our steps and they did a great job – a joy to work with every step (pardon the pun!) of the way. Greg looked after all the consultations in a very responsive, warm and professional manner, Heather responded to email inquiries very diligently and quickly, and Steve and his crew did a fast, quality job with the installation. I highly recommend 1st Step Stairs!

You can see the before and after look of our home. Of course, the before looks worse than it actually was since Lori didn’t plant any flowers in front this summer due to the upcoming construction, but you can still see how much nicer our front entrance is. It’s going to look great when we finish the rest of our exterior upgrades (new siding, new better designed gutters, new front door, new garage door, new shingles, landscaping and the addition of a white pergola to cover the structure). You might also notice that I removed the ugly chain-link fence and dying hedge in front of our house. Lots of work!

Take Lots of Photos – Your Family Will Thank You Later

As you undoubtedly already know, I take a lot of photos of my family. I suppose I have my mom to thank for this habit. She took lots of photos and organized them into albums and, while I appreciated them back then, I really appreciate what she did even more now. Photos are powerful memories that help us look back fondly on happy times.

One twist I’ve introduced into my own family photos is the family fisheye portrait. These are group photos I take by holding my wide-angle fisheye lens in front of me, while we all gather closely together. I love the closeness of these photos, plus it solves the problem of looking back years from now as the invisible dad who was never in any pictures because he was the one behind the camera. Lori and the kids are so practiced at the fisheye pose that they can now set up for it on queue. And we always love the result… I’m sure these group shots will become more special as the years pass.

So take lots of photos – you won’t be sorry you did!

Iocchelli Family Tree

After several years off from it, I’ve finally been updating the Iocchelli Family Tree. The home index card is set to Fausto Iocchelli & Letizia Dardano – my father’s parents. Here are a few links to help you find yourself in the tree:

From those four links, most family members should be able to find themselves in the tree. Please let me know if you see any errors or omissions and note that dates of birth are not visible on the website to protect everyone’s personal information.
