Just Sew It

Vogue 8180

dress

I finished in the lick of time and I received a number of compliments on my dress. Truly? I didn’t think it was that spectacular to receive compliments but it did.

I used a linen like material (cotton) that I purchased from Fabricland. I hate Fabricland. Period. But I did manage to find this material there. I used a bemburg for the lining. I’m picky about what I use for lining as it as to breath well and be comfortable. Nothing worse than being itchy or hot while wearing a dress.

I highly recommend making a muslin to fine tune fit this dress. I did have to take it in more at the princess seams but the bust still gaped open when I was sitting down. Grrrrr.. I also put in an invisible zipper. I think all dresses should have an invisible zipper as it looks much nicer than a centered zipper.

I’m glad I’m finished this dress. I’m going to make my dd’s Halloween costume next. She is going to be a Flapper girl. Easy costume to sew up.

THEN, I will start on my muslin for the trench topper. I want to get a start on that quickly. I’m searching for some fabric for the finished coat but still have not found anything. There are two stores I’m going to visit next weekend so wish me luck!

Next step….

I tissue fitted my dress. As usual, I have to lengthen the bodice by 2 inches. I also made the front neckline a little less deep so I would not have to worry all evening whether my boobs are showing. Oh ya, men love it but I feel uncomfortable with it. I’m not a big girl and I don’t like being gawked at. I found some nice fabric at Fabricland. It’s black with beige flowers. I plan on buying a red purse and wear a reddish lipstick to kind of get that 1940′s look. Now, to prepare the fabric for cutting.

We drove an hour one way to a town just to get this pool:

Next Project

I have been missing my dear sewing machine and have been thinking about my next project. Today my husband mentioned that his cousin will be getting married in October. A cooler month but not winter. I went online shopping for a pattern and decided to make this dress Vogue 8180. I’ll making the view with the sleeves. I like the simple but fitted design of this dress. I also like the way the skirt if pleated. Nice.

Spring Sewing Plan

I have to finish one quilt by the end of March as it is a gift for my good friend Joanne. It’s her 41st birthday and she is the best friend that I’ve had in many many years. I also have to quilt the first “Turning Twenty… Again” quilt that I’m making for my family. In April, May and June, I’d like to do some fashion sewing. Fabricland had a sale on their Burda, Butterick and Vogue patterns. I only picked up a couple of Burdas and one Butterick.

I really should go through my pattern stash and sew something up that I haven’t touched.

On another note, I picked up some crochet and size 8 knitting needles. I found a website that has free online videos. Sort of a prelude to her dvd that you can purchase. I tried knitting and I tried crocheting. I’m having some troubles but I’ll get it.
