Cutting your fabric is very easy but it must be done properly otherwise your fabric will twist. What I mean is it must be cut “on-grain”. The threads in fabric runs parallel to the selvage and perpendicular to the selvage.

The selvage is the edge of the fabric that runs length wise along the fabric edge.

Selvage

In most cases, you will fold the fabric with selvages meeting together. Ensure you smooth out the wrinkles. Your ends should not match as they have not been squared off. Once your fabric is laying flat with no wrinkles and it does not look twisted, you are ready to square your fabric off.

Lay a quilter’s ruler down. In the photo, you may be able to see that I’ve lined up the bottom edge (the fold) evenly. NEXT, using my rotary cutter or scissors, I will cut along the ruler. Now the fabric is squared.

Now you can cut your pieces as required or if you are using a pattern lay your pattern as per the pattern’s instructions.

I do custom sewing for people sometimes specifically home decor. Sewing is a wonderful skill for this very reason and people love window treatments made specially for their home.

I made the following curtains for a living room in a show home in Edmonton located in Ambleside. A new division just off the Anthony Henday on the south side across from Windermere.

For this little girl’s room, I made the window treatment along with a matching throw pillow. The fabric is divine. Want to spice up a bedroom? Pick a fabric that is rich and that you absolutely love. It magically brings a room alive.

My bedroom is getting a makeover courtesy of moi. Sophisticated and whimsical is the inspiration for my bedroom. Pictures soon.

This weekend I plan on sewing my daughter’s Halloween costume. She is going to be a flapper girl. I’d also like to cut out my muslin for the trench coat I’m sewing.

Sheila has lost weight or should I say I have. I’ve lost 15 lbs.! How? By watching my calorie and sodium intake. I do not eat burgers and fries at McDonalds any more and I have cut out 99% of processed foods. Fresh food. That’s it. So, now I have to adjust Sheila which makes me feel good to see her thinner.

I found some fabric at Marshall Fabric for my trench coat. I’m not sure what type of fabric it is as this store does not really properly label their fabrics. I do know this much it is for outerwear. It has the right texture though. I’d like to line this coat with something from Amy Butler. The lining is going to cost more than the main fabric. Oh well.

Project Runway Canada has started and it’s good. Different host and mentor but just as good. I could never do that show if I was a designer. Very competitive and very very stressful. Some of the challenges they give are extremely difficult. You’d have to be a quick thinker and work very fast. One gal competing cannot sew. How can anyone be on that show and not sew. She hand sewed her garments. Weird. I would have liked to see her get the boot as she was also very arrogant.

I have loved Amy Butler’s fabric for a while now and it seems to be one of the few that I really love. There is one in particular that I love I purchased a couple fat quarters for a quilt that I am presently working on. I went back to the same store to buy some yardage from a bolt and they don’t HAVE ANY!!! There is only one other store in my area that carries Amy Butler and they don’t have it either!!!! I could order it online but coming from the states it is so expensive with duty, shipping and exchange. Aaargggh! This fabric that I want is by Belle and is called Pine Coriander. I have some scraps and just may make myself a bag for the Spring/Summer.

Today I finally picked up some quilt batting and fabric for the back of my friend’s quilt. Warm and White is what I purchased from Fabricland. That’s it for quilts until the fall. I want to do some apparel sewing, home dec and some crocheting and maybe some knitting. Now I just have to learn about yarn. There are many wonderful resources on the net for yarn. Looks just as delicious as fabric.

Another blogger stumbled onto my blog and I like reading her blog very much so. She lives in Alabama and loves to sew, scrap, knit and photography. Very interesting.

With the boom in our province there has been an influx of people that our city has become so bloody busy. I have always disliked the city and now I hate it even more. I’d love to move to a small town close to the city but my dh does not like that idea. With all these people you’d think that there would be more fabric available but there isn’t. Fabricland’s choices are horrid and Marshalls is not much better. There is only one shop in the city that is owned by a German lady and she has beautiful, quality fabrics but is expensive. I think I am going to shop at her store and online. Emma One Sock has such a beautiful collection that I think I will try her. I have patterns that I would love to make but I cannot find fabric that I like. I am very picky when shopping for fabric as I have to be passionate about the fabric or else it is a waste of my time sewing it. As for quilting, there are only a few quilting stores in my city and they have beautiful fabrics. I seem to have better luck with quilting fabrics. Yesterday I purchased a number of fat quarters for a quilt I’m going to make for a good friend. It’s her birthday in April and she’s been such a good friend I really want to make her one. I need to pick up a couple more all-brown fat quarters but Earthly Goods ran out. The pattern I am using for her quilt will be the “Turning Twenty…. again”. I love that pattern. Very easy and very quick to sew together. I am more attracted for contemporary patterns and fabrics.

I found this photo on “Fashioned”. A blog that posts pictures of designer’s lines. I love this particular outfit because it combines lace and silk. I think the skirt is silk. If not, I still like it. I’d like to make something very similar for a wedding I’ll be attending in the summer.

If I find a pattern for this top, I will be wearing a camisole of some short. I wouldn’t want the girls to make an appearance. These models are so bloody skinny and tall that I could never get away with that. I’m 5’4″ and weight 130 lbs. I’m not fat but I’m not a stick either.

On Patternreview.com there is a thread where members discuss Project Runway #3. I unfortunately cannot participate in the discussion because Lifenetwork is only on the fourth episode. I recently read someone say, “I wonder if Tim Gunn would go to Wal-mart”. No, I don’t think so. I once heard a gay friend say, “I don’t go to any store with the work “mart” in it. I highly doubt Tim Gunn would go near a Wal-mart. I can hardly stand that store never mind him. I thought that was funny.

So quiet this afternoon and I’m getting a lot of sewing done. My dh took the kids to the waterpark. I hate going there. Way too busy and I absolutely hate busy crowds. I’m a hermit.

I made a ballet skirt out of chiffon with sparkles on it. I finished hemming my dd’s velour pants. I am soooo glad I sew. I just wish sewing was as popular as scrapbooking is. If it was, there would much more local suppliers. Non-sewers just don’t know what they are missing.

I haven’t taken any pictures except for this one on my jacket.

I have not used my seam ripper so much since I was a beginner. I had trouble with getting the topstitching to look nice. Thread issues. Mainly due to tension. I rethreaded and played with the tension once more and that seemed to do the job.

Otherwise, the jacket is coming a long nicely.

I went shopping for fabric on the weekend and could not find anything that thrilled me. Specifically for the Burda skirt that I had planned to make. I put that away and decided to concentrate on other projects. I’m going to make a nightgown for my dd. She saw the pattern and asked me if I would make it. How can I look into those big innocent eyes and say no?!

I also will be whipping up some pants for her for jazz class. The dance stores charge $45.00 for a pair. Ummmm… $45.00 for a pair of stretch pants made out of crappy material. I don’t think so. I bought a Kwik Sew pattern that also included a pattern for a ballet skirt and two choices of a leotard. The material cost me $10. Pattern under $5. So altogether her pants cost me $15.00. Cheap like borst.

I found some cute Christmas fabric too. Remember all the kids movies with Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, the scary snowman, Kris Kringle?

I’m going to make an apron for myself for Christmas.

Wearing aprons are kind of a 50′s thing but since I run a dayhome an apron is a good idea.

I want to get this all finished quickly as I am starting a speed tailoring online class on September 25. I am also starting a beginner quilting class.

wish me luck!!

On another note; the kids and I took my db’s dog, Ebony, to the river. I love taking her there. We played with her for 1 1/2 and she did not complain when we left. Poor thing was very sore afterwards. When I took her home after supper she couldn’t jump up into my van. Poor girl, I had to lift her in. She is 11 years old and her hind legs get sore and swollen if she plays too much.
