I can crochet!!!
Why is this curling?

Not bad. I think I see a hole but it’s my first sample. A sample of the single crochet stitch. Addictive little hobbie.

You’re stitching is looking really good!
I think the curling is OK and will probably flatten out as you go along. It’s been a while since I’ve done rows of single crochet stitches, but it seems like they curled for me too. Maybe making the initial chainstictch more loosely would make that go away (or I could just be full of it too!
)
Whatever you do, don’t be hard on yourself. I’m both left-handed and self taught in crochet. I got about halfway through my first afghan and figured out that I had been looping the thread over the hook in the wrong direction. I was too far along though to want to pull everything back out again, so I finished it up working the stitches the wrong way.

Congratulations on learning to crochet! Aside from sewing, crocheting is my favorite hobby. It’s one of those hobbies that once you get the hang of it, you’ll be “hooked”. Your sample looks fantastic! Keep up the great work.
The curling is usually caused by pulling the thread too tightly while you’re making the stitches. I’ve been crocheting since I was 7 and I have to consciously loosen my thread and stitches or else I have the same problem. Once you get a large enough sample the curling usually goes away even if your stitches are a little tight. Consistency always makes your final product look best and if it still has some curling you can always lightly press the finished product under a damp towel with a warm iron.
Enjoy!!!

Good job! Just loosen up a bit eh, you’re just wound a little to tight.
