Just Sew It

Uptown Bag: Handles Construction

I washed my fabric and then laid out my fabric to cut. I used large washers for weights which I bought at Home Depot and cut by using my rotary cutter.

I then cut out all of my interfacing. I cut two pieces of Timtex for my bottom panel and I also add one piece of Ultra Heavy Interfacing for the bottom panel. I cut Ultra Heavy interfacing for each handle. Only one piece each.

Next, I sewed the interfacing to the handles. Instructions tell you to use a 1/4″ seam all around.

TIP: Put the fabric to the feed dogs and the interfacing on top. I found this method works much better than the reverse. I did try sewing with the fabric on top and had trouble with keeping the fabric from moving. I had to rip some seams on the outside panel. I’ll talk about that more in my next post. I have IDT on my machine and it still did not help.

Once the interfacing is sewn on, I folded the handle in half lengthwise and then sewed all around the edges with a 1/4″ seam.

Handles are finished.
