Just Sew It

Simplicity 4196

Well, since my last attempt at my previous pattern, this one I’m working on is looking good so far. It has gone together very very well so far and I am very impressed with Simplicities instructions. This pattern is very easy to put together but I still like to read the instructions before I get started. I know that the Simplicity company was looking for a pattern writer and I wonder if this pattern was written by a new person. Simplicity patterns are not poorly written to begin with but this new Spring pattern seems to be more simple and clear that previous patterns. Not by much, but there is a difference. They also have a section for tips which I have not seen on any other Simplicity patterns.

I’m making this top out of linen and even though it will wrinkle easily I like that it is light weight. Great for the summer heat. Alberta summers are hot and dry. Many Albertans cannot stand the heat but I have become acustomed to it since I’m outside a lot with the kids(I operate a day home).

I’m adding piping to the edges on the neckline, armholes and between the bodice and the front bottom. I could not find any cording to make piping so I was forced to use yarn. I found a 100% polyester which was labelled “Lion Suede”. There is simply no choices in colour when it comes to piping in the fabric stores. So, I used fabric that I will be making the capri’s to match. I cut it on the bias and stitched it together. Then used my zipper foot to make up my piping. Very easy to do.

My body double graciously posed for me again in my half-constructed top.

My ds’s birthday cake

At the end of May is my ds’s 4th birthday. I usually like to make the kids a cake for their birthday. I enjoy making the character cakes even though they are a lot of work. Last year, I just ordered a Spiderman cake for the boy but I think I’ll make him one this year. He wants Batman but I’m trying to pursuade him into another kind of cake. Why? the Batman cake has way too much black on it. I absolutely hate working with black icing. It’s goopier and does not taste very good. In order to get a black colour you must put a lot of the decorating gel into the icing. I don’t use food colouring. I always pickup decorator’s gel from the local craft store. I also don’t like doing faces with small eyes because eyes are not the easiest to do.

I found these two cakes on the web and am trying very hard to convince him. I don’t think it will be very hard since he is only turning four.

Think I can do it?
